A claimant is someone who claims a patient Medicare rebate on behalf of the patient, such as a parent, spouse or guardian. A patient may also have multiple Medicare claimants, such as parents who alternate claiming. By adding claimant details to the patient's Medicare claim, the claimant receives the rebate instead of the patient.
Note
Don't forget to verify the claimant Medicare details after adding them. This ensures that rebates are paid as soon as possible.
The claimant's details appear on all the patient's invoices and appointments that have Medicare fees. When you process Medicare claims, the rebate goes to the claimant.
To delete or archive a claimant, select the trash icon next to the claimant's Medicare details.
Each Medicare claim allows only one claimant. If you need to add a second claimant (such as for another parent), you can add a second Medicare claim using the same patient details but with a different claimant. This allows you to switch between multiple claims for appointments and invoices.
To add a second claimant, follow the steps below.
The patient now has two Medicare claims. The original claim is automatically archived, so you must unarchive it so you can have the two active claims.
Note
Do you have one referral but two claims? Add the referral to only one of the claims. You can then switch between the claims once you've created the appointment. Since the referral is under the same funder, Halaxy can retain the referral information - such as expiry date and appointment limits - across multiple claims.
If you have a patient with two Medicare claimants, you can switch between them for appointments in these two areas:
