Submit a Medicare or DVA claim without a referral

You can change your default settings to not require a referral, or you can submit an individual claim with a Referral Override Code. These are outlined below.

Change your default claim settings

Follow the steps below and ensure you set the Referral Override Code option to not require a referral (for GPs, this is set by default):

  1. Click Settings > Users.

  2. In the row for the relevant practitioner's name, click the Icon-First-Aid.svg first aid kit icon.

  3. In the pop-up, select your default settings for Medicare and DVA claims. If you are not sure what options you should use, contact Medicare on 132 150.

These settings are now used as the default for all your claims.

Set an individual claim to not require a referral

Alternatively, you can set an individual claim not to require a referral instead of changing your default settings. Follow the steps below:

  1. From the invoice, click Process Bulk Bill / Process Medicare / Process DVA.

  2. In the pop-up, click Additional Information. Additional fields will appear.

  3. In the Referral Override Code drop-down menu, select "Not required (Not Referred)".

  4. Note that Medicare may also require additional information to successfully process the claim. You can use the other fields to add any required information, including the Additional Information field.

  5. Click Process.

The claim will be submitted to Medicare, who will manually review the claim. Note that successfully processing the claim may still require other information. Please contact Medicare for details about claim requirements.
