Add an Individual Healthcare Identifier (IHI) for a patient

The Healthcare Identifiers Service (HI) is a national system with the Australian government for uniquely identifying individuals and healthcare providers. These identifiers help to ensure both patients and practitioners that the correct information is associated with the correct individual at the point of care.

To ensure safe transactions, electronic and barcode prescriptions require all levels of healthcare identifiers to be set in Halaxy:

Note

You must first add your practice group or location's HPI-O before you add IHI for patients. If your HPI-O is on a clinic level, then the patient must be linked to that registered clinic for the patient's IHI to be available.

Tip

If the patient has only one name, enter Onlyname as their first name and their single name as the last name in their patient profile. This is required in order to validate the patient's details.

Add an IHI for a patient

  1. Open the patient profile.

  2. Scroll down, under the Healthcare Identifiers section, click on Add IHI Number.

  3. Select how you want to search and validate patient's IHI:

    • Medicare card number (if applicable)

    • DVA number (if applicable)

    • IHI number (if they already have it)

  4. Click Search.

  5. When the IHI number is retrieved and validated, click Save.

Important

The IHI search relies on combination of the patient's first name, last name, date of birth and gender, so please make sure the patient details on Halaxy are accurate.

Automatically validate IHI for a patient

To ensure your patient's details are always up-to-date and valid, you can automate IHI validation with Medicare/DVA claim verification.

  1. Click Settings > General.

  2. Under the Patient Profiles section, next to Claim verification, click the Icon-Edit.svg pencil icon.
